   Metallic bipolar plates(MBP) for proton exchange membrane fuel cellPEMFC) stacks


    Metallic bipolar plates represent a new generation of advanced and reliable bipolar plates that have several clear advantages over traditional graphite or composite graphite bipolar plates. First, these plates possess a relatively high energy density and are shatter-resistant and easily shaped to a variety of designs. They can also be made to be relatively lightweight, low volume and thin in size.

Bipolar plates are one of the most crucial components of a hydrogen fuel cell stack, because they:

     ◇ Provide space for electrochemical reactions between helium fuel (H2) and the air (O2)

     ◇ Collect the electric current in the fuel cell stack

     ◇ Isolate positive and negative electrodes

     ◇ Connect a single cell

     ◇ Support stack and MEA

     ◇ Provide cooling through heat dissipation

    Advantages

    Metallic bipolar plates have several advantages. In addition to having a higher energy density, structural resilience, as well as having the capacity to be built lighter and thinner to traditional graphite bipolar plates, metallic bipolar plates also have the advantage of being easy to assemble into fuel cell stakcs. They also have the following advantages:

     ◇ cost effective and long service life (exceeding 20,000 hours).

     ◇ well sealed, gas tight

     ◇ strong corrosion resistance (corrosion in PEMFC environment less than 1 uA/cm2)

     ◇ low electrical degradation (less than 0.5% per 1,000 hours).

     ◇ high conductivity, low interfacial contact resistance (less than or equal to 3mΩ•cm2)

    We understand that the energy efficiency and longevity of stacks are often largely determined by the quality of each bipolar plate.
